New Delhi: The Madrid Open tennis tournament has a history of bringing the unexpected to the fore with this edition also witnessing unprecedented things. In the 2025 edition, fans witnessed play being cancelled due to a blackout and legendary player Novak Djokovic suffering a upset.

The drama at the tournament continued as American tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands fell to the ground after she was hit on the head with balls in a women’s doubles match. In the opening match of the event with partner Sofia Kenin, one of the returns from their opponents became troublesome for the American and halted the play for sometime.

As per a report in express.co.uk, Bethanie and Kenin were up against Erin Routliffe and Ashlyn Krueger and in the second set, one of return from Routliffe hit Mattek-Sands on the head which led to her collapse on the court. The tennis player had to be treated by medicos and was given some ice pack before she got up to play again after taking a long time out.

American duo seal contest

After the play resumed, the American duo won the first set in a tiebreak before dropping the second set. The match went down to the wire going to a first-to-10-point breaker but the American tennis pair flourished winning 7-6, 5-7.

The doubles pair from New Zealand had suffered a loss against the American duo recently in the Miami Open final. Mattek-Sands, a five-time women’s doubles Grand Slam champion, continues to shine with her performances in the singles and especially the doubles events.
