Ferrari F2001 driven by Michael Schumacher sets new auction record

New Delhi: Michael Schumacher was at the peak of his career from 2000-04, winning five back-to-back championship titles. Which makes any accessory from that time period a costly relic of the past. The Ferrari Formula One car that the German driver used to take his Monaco and Hungarian Grand Prix win in 2001, and ultimately helped him clinch his fourth World title, has now sold for €15.98m, making it the most expensive car driven by Schumacher.

At a ceremony conducted prior to Saturday’s qualifying in Monaco, where McLaren’s Lando Norris ultimately took pole position, RM Sotheby’s sold the F2001 car. The car remains iconic as Schumacher won his fifth and final win at Monaco.

The event was held in the hospitality area of Formula One’s Paddock Club, which has a view of the city’s well-known port. The auction ultimately came down to offers from a phone bidder and an event participant competing in person. The opening bid was €8 million. With costs included, the room bidder’s €14.2 million bid ultimately won the bid, bringing the total to €15.98 million.

Most expensive F1 cars in auction

It is the fourth most expensive F1 car to be sold, with the world record set back in February when Mercedes ‘streamliner, which Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio had raced, went for £50.9 m. The second most expensive is Lewis Hamilton’s W196, which sold for $29.6 million in 2013, with the second one being another driven by the British driver in 2013, which was sold for $18.8 million in 2023.

The previous most expensive F1 car driven by Schumacher was the F2003 in 2002 which had sold for £11.6m in 2002.

With Charles Leclerc placed in second, Ferrari would obviously hope that Monaco’s local boy wins his second race in front of his home crowd. As for Schumacher, the 56-year-old remains out of public sight since his skiing injury in 2013, which left severe brain injury.

Seven time world champion, Michael Schumacher’s F2001 sells for €15.98m, making it the most expensive car to be auctioned, driven by the German driver.  Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
