New Delhi: Indian para athlete Mahendra Gurjar scripted history by setting a new world record in the men’s javelin F42 category at the Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Switzerland on Monday. Gurjar produced a brilliant throw of 61.17m to claim the gold medal in the men’s javelin F42 category at the event and set a new record en route to his triumph.
Gurjar dominated the field in the men’s javelin F42 category at the Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix. He started with a throw of 56.11m in his first attempt and followed it up with a 55.51m throw in his second attempt. Gurjar produced a massive throw of 61.17m in his third attempt to create a new world record.
The 27-year-old Indian para athlete broke the previous record held by Brazil’s Roberto Floriani Edenilson, who threw 59.19m in the men’s F42 category in 2022. Athletes with movement moderately affected in one leg compete in the F42 category. Gurjar is the Asian record holder in the category and clinched a gold medal at the 23rd National Para Athletics Championship in India earlier this year.

Gurjar’s gold medal in the men’s javelin F42 event was his second at the Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix as he also won a gold medal in the men’s long jump T42 event. Gurjar finished on top of the podium in the men’s long jump T42 with an effort of 5.59m. He won the gold medal on May 23.
Gurjar’s coach Samarjeet Singh Malhi revealed that the 27-year-old has started competing in men’s long jump along with javelin throw. “Besides javelin, we have started long jump also. It’s his (Gurjar’s) first competition in long jump T42 and he will be the Asia number one after this gold,” Malhi was quoted as saying by PTI.
Meanwhile, two-time Paralympic gold medallist Sumit Antil continued his impressive run at the Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Switzerland as he bagged the gold medal in the men’s javelin F64 event with an excellent throw of 72.35m
