New Delhi: Emotions knew no bounds in the Gujarat Titans (GT) camp, flowing heavily after the team endured a defeat in the crucial Eliminator clash of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, facing elimination from the tournament by the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday. As the two teams locked horns at the Mullanpur Stadium in New Chandigarh, MI got the better of the 2022 IPL champions and handed them a 20-run loss in a high-scoring encounter.

The clash was important as it boosted the winning side to Qualifier 2, and MI finally gained the upper hand to set up a clash with Punjab Kings (PBKS) – the loser of Qualifier 1. But… while the players might move on from the heartbreaking defeat in the coming days, this doesn’t seem to be the case with their families, who were in the stands, cheering for their loved ones, and when the result went haywire, they couldn’t stop the tears.

Titans’ head coach Ashish Nehra’s son was seen crying inconsolably in the stands after the last ball was bowled, and Mumbai sealed victory. Even the people around him got tensed earlier, as they saw the balls and runs difference getting bigger with each delivery bowled, and while GT once looked well on course in the chase, MI bowlers chipped in and added more misery for the families of GT players.

Several videos of Nehra’s son went viral in which he was seen getting consoled by other people in the stands around him, trying to control his tears. A few other GT members were also left distraught as they tried to hide their emotions after the Eliminator loss. GT skipper Shubman Gill’s sister Shahneel has been a regular visitor in the GT games, but on Saturday, she was seen sobbing and had to be consoled by the other members seated in the stands

GT’s juggernaut crashes

A plethora of these sad reactions were the result of GT’s rampant run in the season as they registered nine wins out of 14 games to stay in the upper echelons of the points table, and once looked like the team getting a top-two finish, but it all went south for them in the last two league-stage clashes, denting their hopes and landing them in the Eliminator, whose rout effectively ended their campaign.

If not the Qualifier 1, GT were the favourites to win the Eliminator and move ahead in their race to the second title, but their below-par bowling performance cost them the crucial clash as well. There was some noise around GT’s bowling not being up to the standards as they headed into the playoffs, and fear loomed over them. It all came to true on Friday as the batters did their part effectively, but the bowlers leaked 228 runs to give early fears of an elimination. Nonetheless, Mumbai now heads to Qualifier 2 to take on PBKS in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1.
