New Delhi: A day after he left Inter Milan, Simone Inzaghi joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal as their head coach and will have two weeks to prepare for their first game at the Club World Cup.

He agreed on a two-year deal at the Riyadh-based side with a reported pay package of over 20-30 million euros ($23-$34.25 million) per season.

“The Italian genius is here,” the Saudi club wrote on social media, also informing that the signing took place in Paris.

Inzaghi left Milan after the Serie A club plunged to a humiliating 5-0 loss in the Champions League final against French champions Paris Saint-Germain to cap off a trophyless season after entertaining hopes of a treble at one point of time.

The 5-0 loss is the most one-sided loss in the 70-year history of major European club competition finals.

The 49-year-old Inzaghi guided Inter to the Serie A title last season and was also in the dugout when they lost to Manchester City in the 2023 Champions League final.

In four years at Inter, Inzaghi won six trophies: one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia triumphs and three Italian Super Cups.

He had a year left on his contract but left to join the record 19-time Saudi champions and four-time Asian club champions.

“The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a run of four years during which I gave everything,” Inzaghi said in a letter addressed to Inter fans on the club’s website on Tuesday.

Al-Hilal begin their Club World Cup campaign against Spanish giants Real Madrid on June 18 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Inter are reportedly keen to bring in Cesc Fabregas as Inzaghi’s successor as he coached Como to a 10th-place finish in Serie A.

Inter finished a point behind Napoli in Serie A last month, and lost to bitter city rivals AC Milan in the Italian Cup semis in April and also in the Italian Super Cup final in January.
