New Delhi: Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted for match-fixing by the Hambantota High Court during the 2020 Lanka Premier League. Senanayake was charged for attempting to lure a fellow player for fixing the game during the LPL tournament.
The Attorney General’s department has said that this has become the first such case of indictment of a national level cricketer for match-fixing under country’s recently introduced anti-corruption law. Earlier, he was arrested and subsequently released on bail in 2023.

Local media confirms cricketer’s name
According to local media reports, he had made the corrupt approach to another national player Tharindu Ratnayake who was associated with the Colombo Kings teams at that time. As per the report published Sri Lankan ‘Daily Mirror’, Senanayake had also contacted two other cricketers at the same time but the names of the players are not confirmed.
‘Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing,’ a report in the Sri Lankan ‘Daily Mirror’ stated.
The 40 year-old represented Sri Lanka in a lone Test match, 49 ODIs and 24 T20Is between 2012 and 2016. Across all the three formats, he claimed a total of 78 wickets. Senanayake was a member of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
