‘I am not bitter’: Kylian Mbappe unfazed by PSG’s Champions League victory

New Delhi: Kylian Mbappe says that he holds no bitterness toward Paris Saint-Germain after the French club secured their first-ever Champions League title just a year after his departure. The French forward who plays for Real Madrid now made it clear he has no regrets about leaving his boyhood club.

The 26-year-old left PSG as the club’s all-time top scorer, having netted 256 goals during his seven-year stint. Despite his incredible individual achievements, the Champions League trophy remained elusive for him and the club until now. But PSG changed under Luis Enrique and with their dominant performance this season they steamrolled past Inter Milan 5-0 in the UCL final, finally ending their European drought.

Speaking to the press on Saturday ahead of France’s Nations League third-place play-off against Germany, Mbappe addressed the topic candidly. “I didn’t leave too soon; my story with PSG was over. I am not bitter; I had reached the end of the road,” Mbappe stated.

Destiny without me

Reflecting on PSG’s historic victory, Mbappe acknowledged that fate played its part. “I tried everything, and it was destiny that meant it had to happen without me,” he said. “PSG winning the Champions League without me doesn’t affect me. I was happy they deserved it.”

Mbappe also praised his former teammates, noting how the club had suffered years of near misses in Europe. “They’ve had so many years where they struggled. I’ve been there too; I’ve played in every Champions League stage in Paris except for the victory. They’re the best team in Europe right now.”

A desire to win at Madrid

While PSG’s European glory didn’t involve him, Mbappe remains determined to secure his own Champions League medal. He moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer in July 2024, hoping to fulfill that ambition. However, Madrid fell short this season, bowing out in the quarterfinals against Arsenal and ending the season trophyless for the first time in four years.

Still, Mbappe’s personal form has been impressive as he bagged 31 goals to claim the European Golden Shoe. Despite the challenges at his new club, he is focused on the future. “I want to win the Champions League, of course. But PSG’s success doesn’t change my path,” he concluded.

As he continues his journey at Real Madrid, Mbappe remains calm about PSG’s triumph and determined to fulfil his dream with the Spanish giants.
