New Delhi: Australian opener Travis Head smacked a 19-ball fifty in the first T20I match between England and Australia at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on 11 September, Wednesday. His brilliant knock helped his team to beat England in the series opener.
Head showcased his brilliant power hitting and scored 59 runs off just 23 balls. He smashed eight boundaries and four maximums during his fiery knock. He stitched an 86-run opening partnership with Matthew Short and provided a explosive start to Australia’s innings despite losing the toss to England.
Head and Short’s opening partnership and a crucial cameo from Josh Inglis, helped Australia to post a competitive total of 179 on the scoreboard. This aggressive batting display from three batters compensated for the struggle of the middle order as Australia set a challenging target for England.
Australian bowlers took wickets at regular intervals and defended the target successfully. Sean Abbott picked up three wickets while Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood also took two wickets each. The Aussies put up a strong performance in the first T20I against the new-look England and it will be interesting to see which team will come on top in the second T20I which will be played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on September 13.
‘The coach and captain want me to bat freely’: Travis Head
After the match, Travis Head talked about the match and said that he was trying to acclimatise to the wicket. He also praised his opening partner Short and said that they’ve played a lot of cricket together at the Adelaide Strikers.
“Nice start, bowled well at the start, got one away, set a platform. I was trying to acclimatise to a wicket with pace, hitting good shots and Shorty got a cracking start. Good partnership to start the series well. We’ve played at the Strikers, a consistent theme at the top, we can all play that” Head said.
Head further added that they were trying to use the pace on the ball which worked for them perfectly. He also said that his coach and captain want him to bat freely.
“We were trying to use the pace on the ball. Guys have been playing together for the last couple of years. The coach and captain want me to bat freely. I try to whack it every time” Head added.
