New Delhi: After the triple header, Formula One got a much-deserved break before reaching the Canadian shores. Over the years, the 4.3 km Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve has seen some epic races and iconic battles, with the close concrete walls remaining unforgiving to the slightest of mistakes. The Canadian GP comes after McLaren took their third 1 and 2 finish. Oscar Piastri heads to the weekend with a 10-point lead in the driver’s championship against his teammate Lando Norris.

The race weekend is also crucial for defending champion Max Verstappen, who is just a single penalty point away from being banned for a race. However, Red Bull’s Verstappen remains unnerved by the threat and has even said he will continue with his style of racing. So it will be a little slushy stopover in North America before F1 spends its summer on the European continent. What will dominate this race is, of course, the tight hairpin and chicane and an occasional sighting of groundhogs.

How drivers and teams stand

While McLaren have dominated every points table, taking 362 points from the season, Ferrari were facing the heat from their fans, and yet, the Italian team has managed to find themselves in the second spot of the Constructors’ points table. They are nowhere close to threatening the Papaya team, standing with a gap of 197 points from the McLaren team. With 165 points from the season so far, Ferrari are ahead of the Mercedes team by just six points. Red Bull are fourth with 144 points, with Williams in fifth place with just 54 points.

While Charles Leclerc took a much-needed podium finish in the Spanish GP, George Russell found himself and Mercedes back with some crucial points from the race, finishing fourth in the race. Russell is now inches away from the third-placed Verstappen, whose 137 points are 26 points ahead of the British Driver.

There was a positive that even Aston Martin could take from the race, with their veteran driver, Fernando Alonso, finally collecting points in the weekend at his home race. For Sauber, Nico Hulkenberg took home the fifth place, finishing ahead of the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. For Hamilton, too, it was one of his best finishes in the Red team.

A lot of eyes will be on Verstappen, having won the last three Canadian GPs, though so far this season he has won only twice. However, on both ocassions, he was the defending champion and his pace so far in the practice may have hinted at the Dutch racer having a fantastic outing.
