New Delhi: Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed full confidence in new signing Liam Delap, suggesting that the 22-year-old possesses the calibre and potential to succeed Harry Kane as England’s future No. 9. Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s opening game of the FIFA Club World Cup against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, Maresca highlighted his past experience of working closely with Delap during their time at Manchester City’s under-21 setup.
Delap arrives at Stamford Bridge carrying high expectations, especially after being handed the prestigious number nine shirt, an iconic number at the club that has often been associated with both immense pressure and past struggles. When asked about Delap’s potential, the Italian coach didn’t hesitate. He said, “I don’t have any doubt that he can be England’s number nine in the future.”
Despite Chelsea’s mixed history with high-profile strikers like Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, and Alvaro Morata, who all struggled at various points, Maresca believes that Delap has the right mindset to overcome the pressure. He further added, “Liam knows quite well how important the number nine is for this club… I see him quite relaxed, easy, and he’s doing well. Since he arrived, he’s working well.”

Maresca also underlined the benefit of their previous working relationship from their Manchester City days. He pointed out that because they’ve known each other for years, he’s fully aware of what Delap is capable of and what the club can offer to help him grow. According to Maresca, Chelsea can provide the right environment for Delap to improve and evolve into a top striker.
However, the Chelsea boss was quick to note that no player, including the new arrival, will be guaranteed a place in the starting lineup. Delap will have to fight for his spot, with Nicolas Jackson also in contention for the central striker’s role.
