New Delhi: Women’s tennis is set to make a grand return to India as the WTA 250 Chennai Open finds its way back onto the 2025 Hologic WTA Tour calendar. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on October 27 and will be played at the iconic SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, Chennai. This will mark the first time the event will be held since 2022, when it successfully reintroduced top-tier women’s tennis to Indian fans after more than a decade.

The announcement was made official on Monday by the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), with its president, former tennis star Vijay Amritraj, expressing gratitude for the local support that made the return possible.

Amritraj said, “Finally, our efforts to bring a major international sporting event to Chennai have paid off, thanks to the strong support of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).”
This year’s edition will feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. All the matches will be played on outdoor hard courts and the prize pool is expected to be in the region of $250,000.

Chennai previously hosted the event in September 2022 where Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova lifted the singles trophy while Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani claimed the doubles title in a tournament that saw packed stands and enthusiastic local turnout. That edition was granted a one-year WTA licence due to cancellations in China and it turned out to be a resounding success for both players and fans alike.

A boost for Indian tennis

The return of the Chennai Open is more than just a date on the tennis calendar. It represents a significant opportunity for women’s tennis in India as coaches and experts believe that events like this can inspire younger players and will bring more visibility to the women’s game and encourage grassroots development in the country.

The WTA has been enjoying a strong start to the 2025 season, with 20 different singles champions across various levels of tournaments and this return to Chennai only adds to the momentum. The WTA’s new brand identity was launched in March and that has helped the sport gain traction on digital platforms with a notable rise in followers and engagement.

As the city prepares to welcome world-class tennis once again, the focus now shifts to ensuring a smooth and successful tournament with hopes that it becomes a regular fixture on the calendar in years to come.
