New Delhi: India is reporting a sharp rise in head and neck cancer cases, reports suggest. Amid this, medical experts have emphasised the need to focus on head and neck cancer.
These cancers can be broadly categorised into two types: squamous cell carcinoma, which accounts for about 90 per cent of the cases and thyroid or salivary gland can cancers.
Head and neck cancer treatment outcomes vary widely based on factors like cancer stage and treatment approach. According to the American Cancer Society, the overall 5-year survival rate for head and neck cancer is around 65 per cent.
But can head and neck cancer be treated completely?
Early- stage has higher survival rates
Early-stage cancers typically have higher survival rates, with localised tumours having a 83 per cent 5-year survival rate. However, for those with advanced-stage cancers that have spread to distant parts, the survival rate drops to around 39 per cent.
In conversation with News9, Dr Vidya Bhushan R, Consultant – Head & Neck Surgical Oncology, Narayana Health, Bangalore said, “The importance of detecting the early symptoms of head and neck cancer is critical, the early signs should not be overlooked. If cancer is identified promptly, it can effectively impact the treatment, diagnosis and prevention. Quick or early detection is extremely crucial for the management of head and neck cancer. This becomes important when a person is facing a symptom of these cancers which needs immediate medical attention.”

Despite challenges, advancements in treatment modalities, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, offer hope. Many cancers of the head and neck can be cured, especially if they are found early. Doctors can shed light on Head and neck cancer treatment.

A consistent sore throat.
Having headaches very often
Hoarseness or voice changes.
Pain while chewing or swallowing
Pain in the upper teeth area
Facial numbness or pain.
Neck pain that do not go away
Problem in breathing or speaking.
A lump in the throat, mouth or neck area
Consistent earaches or infections.
Nosebleeds, bloody saliva or phlegm.
Mouth or tongue sore that do not heal.
