New Delhi: Ultramarathoner Natalie Dau, a 52-year-old woman, has set an incredible record for running 1,000 kilometres across different countries in a span of 12 days.
Dau faced many difficulties. Among them were shoes melting due to heat, hip injury, facing heat waves, and more during the record marathon. She covered her two marathons daily and ended her 1000km journey in Singapore on June 5.
Dau set the world record for the “Fastest 1000km Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon” and now waits for her certification from Guinness World Records for the ‘Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot’.
“Today is the first time in four days I have questioned if I would actually finish this thing. I love the challenge of the sport, love the rawness of it all, but hate these low points. And they come often,” Dau told BBC.
“Whether you come in first or last, it doesn’t matter. You’ve done something almost superhuman, something that 0.05% of the world’s population will never do,” she added.
Dau’s ultramarathon raised over $50,000 for the global charity GRLS, this charity supports women and girls through sports.
Dau stated that her shoes melted in the 35-degree Celsius high temperature, She also carried a hip injury from Day 1 of the ultramarathon. The running machine was also diagnosed with a urinary tract infection on the third day of the Ultramarathon but despite all the challenges, she never gave up and covered 84 kilometres and through to all the challenges she faced.

An Australian-born Singaporean ultra-marathon runner, Dau competes in long marathons compared to the standard marathons which cover only 42.2 kilometres. She started her career in her late 30s to improve her fitness goals. Dau has participated in 10 ultramarathons and won all of them She also co-authored the book- Run Like a Woman.
Ultramarathons not only require physical endurance but also mental strength to cover the distance.
