New Delhi: The Ukrainian side have begun their Euro 2024 campaign losing to potentially one of the weakest sides of the tournament. But who knew the underdogs would outplay the dark horses and begin their campaign with a stellar 3-0 victory?
The underdogs led with an inspired performance and showcased their prowess in front of a jubilant crowd. Romania, with just 28% possession, managed to turn the game in their favour. Ukraine even after having 13 shots could only get two shots on target whereas Romania got five on target out of nine.
Stancius provides the perfect start
Romania were looking good on the ball from the very start of the match. Keeping their form in check and waiting patiently for the opportunity, Romania’s Nicolae Stancius scored a goal in the 29th minute from 22 yards by unfurling an outswinger that nestled into the top corner.
With Romania leading 1-0, Ukraine aimed to return solid for the second half.
Romania breaks well again!
With momentum firmly on the Romanian side, they took Ukraine by storm as the second half started. Razvan Marin, though, doubled Romania’s lead eight minutes into the second half to stun the Ukranians. While the Ukrainian side was trying to push hard to get on the scoreboard Denis Dragus gave another electrifying shock to the dark horses as he swung the ball in the next in the 57th minute of the game.
As the final whistle blew, Romania celebrated a well-deserved 3-0 victory, marking a successful start to the campaign. The Romanian supporters erupted in joy acknowledging their team’s performance.
What next…
The Romania side deserved to win and the confidence that they will take from this makes them a threat going forward in the tournament for other teams. Ukraine, on the other hand, had an absolute mare, let down by their keeper in the much-needed times but also not being able to deliver even after having 72% possession.
