Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission puts PPA with Chhattisgarh on hold

Hyderabad: Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) on Tuesday put the Power Purchase Agreement (PPAs) with Chhattisgarh on hold.

The agreement was made by the previous BRS government and was operational from April 2017.

Senior officials allege a loss of Rs 6,000 crore to Telangana:

On Monday, Telangana government officials said that the BRS power purchase agreement (PPA) with Chhattisgarh caused a loss of Rs 6,000 crore to the state, refuting ex-cm K Chandrasekhar Rao’s claims.

KCR had slammed Justice L Narasimha Reddy for being biased and asked him to step down from Commission of Inquiry (CoI), which is probing the matter.

Senior government officials said that the BRS govt had purchased 17,996 million units power from Chhattisgarh between 2017 and 2022 and a payment of Rs 7,719 crore was made.

“The government claimed that the dues to be paid to Chhattisgarh were Rs 1,081 crore, transmission charge for supplying power was Rs 1,362 crore. This means the previous govt purchased power at Rs 3.90 per unit but actually spent Rs 5.64 per unit,” a senior official said.

It has to be recalled that the power supply purchase from Chhattisgarh in 2017 end had been insufficient to meet the needs of the state as the supply never crossed 1,000 MW at ay point. Telangana Discom companies had to purchase power from the open market, resulting in additional expenditure of Rs 2,083 crore between 2017 and 2022.

Dispute between Telangana, Chhattisgarh:

Officials said that there was a dispute between the two states as the BRS govt said that it owed Rs 1,081 crore but Chhattisgarh government claimed that Telangana owed it Rs 1,715 crore.

Moreover, TSERC was reportedly had not given the go ahead for the power purchase from Chhattisgarh.
