Senior US diplomat meets Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Mikati in Beirut

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with a senior adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

Mikati held talks with Amos Hochstein in Beirut during the envoy’s visit to the country in an effort to find a diplomatic solution to head off a larger war.

Cross-border attacks by Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have been taking place almost daily since the war in Gaza began in October and escalated dramatically a week ago, after Israel killed a high-ranking Hezbollah commander in a strike on south Lebanon.

Mikati reiterated that Lebanon did not want any further escalation in violence and called on Israel to ease its attacks to bring stability to the border, his office quoted him as saying.

Following the meeting Hochstein said the pair had an “excellent discussion” and efforts were ongoing to find a diplomatic solution.
