New Delhi: Mumbai Indians (MI), the joint-most Indian Premier League (IPL) title holders, recorded their sixth victory of the IPL 2025 and a fifth in a row when they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. The afternoon return leg clash turned out to be Mumbai’s revenge on Lucknow, as the visiting team had earlier beaten Hardik Pandya and co. in Lucknow during the first leg.
Nevertheless, the juggernaut of the Mumbai Indians has got them to the upper echelons of the points table after they once reeled at the bottom with four losses in the initial five games. In what was a brilliant turnaround of the fortunes, the Hardik Pandya-led side went on to register five consecutive wins in the season, and that has brought them face to face to an eerie situation, although a sweet one for them.
The Mumbai side lifted their first-ever IPL title in 2013, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, who delivered four more trophies in the years 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. In 2023, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) matched them to become the joint-most successful IPL team. However, four of those MI’s five trophies came when the team won five or more consecutive games in those respective seasons.
In 2013, MI had five wins in a row, following a similar fate in 2015 as well. In 2017, MI registered six wins on the trot, while in 2020, they had five straight wins as well. Only in 2019 did they lift the trophy without this occurrence. Call it superstition or what, but now that they have five back-to-back wins in the 2025 season as well, it can be said that they’re building something around this uncanny stat.
To shatter this belief, they had six consecutive wins in 2008 but stood fifth at the end, and had five in 2010 but ended the season as runners-up.
Most consecutive wins for MI in IPL
Six in 2008
Five in 2010 (Runners up)
Five in 2013 (Champions)
Five in 2015 (Champions)
Six in 2017 (Champions)
Five in 2020 (Champions)
Five in 2025*

First win vs LSG
Another shocking stat for MI is that on Sunday, they secured their first-ever victory against LSG in a league stage game, out of seven attempts in the IPL so far. Their only previous win against LSG came in the Eliminator in IPL 2023. They have now climbed to the third spot of the points table with six wins and four losses in 10 games, boasting 12 points.
Meanwhile, LSG has slipped to the sixth position with five wins and five losses in 10 fixtures, having 10 points to their credit. MI next face Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 1, while LSG will be up against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 4.
Mumbai Indians secured their fifth victory on the trot in the IPL 2025 as they beat Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Are they heading for their sixth IPL title?
