Juneteenth
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth has since evolved into a celebration of African American culture, heritage, and achievements, featuring a variety of events such as parades, music festivals, and educational activities. Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth serves as a significant reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice in America.
