T20 World Cup: Hope, Russell, Chase combine for West Indies’ comfortable Super 8 win against USA

New Delhi: West Indies bounced back in the T20 World Cup 2024 with an easy nine-wicket win against co-hosts USA in a Super 8 clash held at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Friday. Shai Hope starred with bat while the likes of Andre Russell, Roston Chase, and Alzarri Joseph made the most from the ball as the Windies thrashed the USA and kept them on the sidelines of a semi-final qualification.

USA had posted a below-par 128/10 in 19.5 overs after being invited by the home side to bat first. The chase looked like a piece of cake for the Windies and similar was the result as opener Shai Hope smacked the US bowlers left, right, and centre and scored a quick 82 runs off a mere 39 deliveries laced with four fours and eight sixes. He didn’t really need any support from the other end as it looked like.

Johnson Charles contributed with 15 runs while Nicholas Pooran stayed till the end with Hope, scoring 27* runs off 12 deliveries with a four and three sixes. Only Harmeet Singh entered the wicket-taking tally for the USA as West Indies chased the target down in just 10.5 overs with the scoreboard at 130/1. Roston Chase was adjudged the Player of the Match for his fiery spell of 3/19, which are his best bowling returns in the T20Is.

Russell, Chase derail USA batters

As USA strode out to bat, Russell delivered early for the Windies, sending back opener Steven Taylor in just the second over. The USA looked in revival mode when Andries Gous and Nitish Kumar scored 29 and 20 respectively and stitched a 48-run stand for the second wicket but Gudakesh Motie sent the latter back in the over after the powerplay. Gous followed him in the next over as Alzarri Joseph entered the wicket-taking party.

It was the turn of Roston Chase next who picked the next three wickets (Skipper Aaron Jones, Corey Anderson, and Harmeet Singh) of the USA with the last two coming in succession. The USA batters failed to read the line and length of the bowlers as Russell picked two more while Joseph got one more to his credit.

Both Russell and Joseph equalled T20 World Cup records as Russell now has joint-most wickets for West Indies in T20 World Cups (27 – Dwayne Bravo) while Joseph has equalled Samuel Badree for most wickets (11) for West Indies in a T20 World Cup edition. The USA were skittled out at 128, leaving the West Indies a cakewalk of a chase.

Shai Hope smoked an unbeaten 82 runs while Andre Russell and Roston Chase picked three wickets apiece as West Indies thrashed co-hosts USA by nine wickets at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Friday.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
