T20 World Cup: ICC reprimands Rashid Khan for misconduct in Afghanistan’s win over Bangladesh

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council reprimanded Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan for misconduct in their T20 World Cup Super Eights match against Bangladesh.

Khan threw his bat on the ground in frustration after teammate Karim Janat refused a second run in their eight-run win tht sealed their maiden entry in the semi-finals of T20 World Cup.

The incident occurred in the last over of Afghanistan’s innings, when Rashid lost his temper at Janat as he wanted the strike.

“Rashid was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match,” the ICC said in a statement.

“In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Rashid’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.”

The ICC said that Khan has admitted his offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Richie Richardson. As he accepted the sanction, the ICC added that there was no requirement for a formal hearing.

The charges against Khan was brought by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza.

As per the ICC’s code of conduct, Level 1 breaches are levied a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Afghanistan won via the DLS method in the rain-affected match against Bangladesh and will face South Africa in the first semi-final in Tarouba, Trinidad.
