South Africa crush Afghanistan to end semi-final jinx; enter maiden World Cup final

New Delhi: South Africa defeated Afghanistan by 9 wickets at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad and qualified for the final of the T20 World Cup 2024. They have broken the semi-final jinx and qualified for their first-ever ICC final.

South African bowlers shine in semi-final

South African bowlers rattled the Afghanistan batting line-up with brilliant bowling. Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first but his decision backfired quickly as Marco Jansen dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the first over of the innings. Kagiso Rabada got the wicket of Zadran and Nabi in his first over. Tabraiz Shamsi also dismissed Karim Janat and Noor Ahmad in the same over.  Afghanistan batters looked clueless in front of the Proteas bowlers as they were bundled out for just 56 runs.

Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi picked up three wickets each while Rabada and Anrich Nortje also took two wickets each.

Markram, Hendricks star in run-chase

Chasing the target of 57 runs, Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Quinton de Kock in the second over but Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks stitched a brilliant partnership of 55 runs for the second wicket and took their team over the line. Markaram scored unbeaten 23 runs off 21 balls and Hendricks also scored unbeaten 29 runs off 25 balls.

After the match South African skipper Aiden Markram said that it feels good to qualify for the final of the T20 World Cup and credited his team and staff for the massive effort. He also said that he was fortunate to lose the toss as they would have also batted first on the tricky surface. He also praised his bowlers and said that they have done a great job for the team.

“Feels good. It’s not only the captain that gets you here, it is a massive squad effort. Plenty of guys behind the scenes as well. Fortunate to have lost the toss, we would have batted too. We were brilliant with the ball, got it in the right areas and kept it really simple. The bowlers have been incredible for us” Markram said in the post match presentation.
