To file your income tax return online, first-time taxpayers need to register on the e-Filing portal, which grants access to a range of tax-related services.

Valid and active PAN (Permanent Account Number)
Valid mobile number
Valid email ID

How to Register on the Income Tax E-Filing Portal

Visit the e-Filing portal homepage (https://www.incometax.gov.in/) and click on ‘Register’.
Enter your PAN under ‘Register as a Taxpayer’ and click ‘Validate’.
Fill in basic details including name, date of birth (or date of incorporation for entities), gender, and residential status as per PAN records, then click ‘Continue’.
Provide contact details such as primary mobile number, email ID, and address on the ‘Contact Details’ page. Click ‘Continue’.
Enter the OTPs (one-time passwords) sent to your mobile number and email ID within the specified time (OTP valid for 15 minutes). Click ‘Continue’.
Review details, make edits if necessary, and click ‘Confirm’.
Set your desired password, confirm it, and click ‘Register’.
Upon successful registration, click ‘Proceed to Login’ to access the portal.
