New Delhi: Rohit Sharma continued his fine form for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final against England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. Rohit notched up his second half-century on the trot as he played a brilliant knock of 57 runs off 39 balls laced with six fours and two sixes.
Rohit lost his opening partner Virat Kohli cheaply on just 9 runs off 9 balls in the third over of India’s innings after the Men in Blue were asked to bat by England skipper Jos Buttler, who won the toss in the semi-final. The Hitman didn’t shy away from showcasing intent despite Kohli’s early departure and continued with his aggressive approach.
Rohit, who headed into the semi-final after a sensational knock of unbeaten 92-run-knock against Australia in India’s last outing, picked up from where he had left as he notches up his second consecutive fifty in style. The Hitman’s 57-run knock helped him achieve a remarkable feat and join the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly in an elite list.
Rohit became the fifth Indian captain after the likes of Dhoni, Ganguly and Kohli to complete 5,000 runs as captain in international cricket across all formats. Kohli leads the elite list with 12,8883 runs as captain followed by Dhoni, who amassed 11,207 runs as captain across formats. Mohammad Azharuddin holds the third spot with 8095 runs to his name.
Indian captains with 5000-plus runs across formats:
12883 – Virat Kohli
11207 – MS Dhoni
8095 – Mohammad Azharuddin
7643 – Sourav Ganguly
5033* – Rohit Sharma
Rohit’s half-century helps India post 171/7 on the board
India rode on Rohit’s 57-run knock and Suryakumar Yadav’s 47 off 36 balls to post 171/7 on the board in 20 overs. The duo shared an important stand of 73 runs for the third wicket which helped India post a fighting total on a sluggish wicket in Guyana. The bowl is sticking and keeping low on the wicket and Indian bowlers have a strong chance to successfully defend the total and take India into their first T20 World Cup final since 2014.
