Shanto to lead, No Shakib in Bangladesh squad for ODI series against Afghanistan

New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to start on November 6 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan isn’t part of the team and hasn’t played any international match since the Test series against India.

He also missed his ‘farewell Test match’ against South Africa at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Earlier, BCB chief Faruque Ahmed said that Shakib would unlikely to participate in the series against Afghanistan. “After Shakib couldn’t come to play his (farewell) Test, he wasn’t doing much practice. I think he needs some time to regroup” Faruque said in a press conference.

Najmul Shanto will continue to lead the team in the ODI series. Under his leadership, Bangladesh lost the home Test series against South Africa by 2-0 and he had shown reluctance to captain the team. He also informed about his decision to the board. Mehidy Hasan Miraz is named as the vice-captain of the team for the ODI series.

Earlier, the BCB chief said that Mehidy Hasan and Taskin Ahmed are the contenders to lead the team in case Shanto steps down from his role in the near future. Left-handed batter Zakir Hasan and spinner Nasum Ahmed have been recalled in the ODI squad. Zakir has played just one ODI match while Nasum last represented Bangladesh in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam and Nahid Rana are the four bowlers included in the squad. All three ODI matches will be played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on November 6,9 and 11.
