All about Telecom Act, 2023: What it means, provisions and changes explained

New Delhi: The department of telecommunications on Friday shared an explanation about the New Telecom Act, 2023, which partially came into effect on June 26, 2024. The Act replaces the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Indian Wireless Telegraph Act of 1933.

“The Telecom Act, 2023 strengthens protections for citizen privacy while safeguarding telecom networks,” said the DoT in a post on social media platform X. The new Act borrows provisions related to interception and suspension of telecom services from previous Acts. The government also added provisions to introduce limits during extraordinary circumstances.

The Telecom Act 2023 lays down standards for the manufacturing, import and sale of telecom gear.

The Act lays down rules that safeguard telecom networks.

It designates infrastructure as critical and lays down mandatory security upgrades.

It empowers the government to take over telecom services and equipment in the interest of public safety. This will also apply in cases of a public emergency such as to manage a disaster.
