Princess Anne, who was admitted to hospital due to an accident, has been discharged

Princess Anne has returned home after spending five nights in hospital recovering from minor head injuries and concussion sustained when she was struck by a horse at her Gloucestershire estate.

The 73-year-old royal departed from Southmead Hospital in Bristol privately, avoiding public view, and headed back to her residence at Gatcombe Park. Her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, visited her during her hospital stay and updated reporters on her condition, noting that she is “recovering slowly.”

“Profoundly grateful to hospital staff,” says Princess Anne’s husband

“We are both profoundly grateful to hospital staff and emergency services,” Sir Tim Laurence said. “We are deeply touched by all the kind messages we have received from so many people near and far. It means a great deal.”

On Tuesday, Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, also visited her separately at the hospital. It’s now understood that the princess will continue her recovery at home and will only resume public duties once her medical team deems it safe.

Here is what you need to know

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Gloucestershire estate when Anne was walking and was struck by a horse. Emergency services responded, and while an air ambulance was initially dispatched, she was ultimately transported to the hospital by road after receiving treatment at the scene.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer both extended their wishes for Anne’s speedy recovery earlier this week. Known for her equestrian skills, Princess Anne made history as the first royal to compete in the Olympics in 1976 and is recognised for her diligent work ethic and straightforward demeanour. She is considered King Charles’ right-hand woman.

Details about the exact nature of the injuries indicate they were caused by a horse’s legs or head, though precise specifics have not been disclosed by medical authorities.
