Mumbai: Air India, the Tata Group-owned air carrier, said on Monday that it plans to establish its pilot training institute in Maharashtra at Amravati. The institute will be equipped to train 180 commercial pilots per year. In what is expected to become South Asia’s largest training institute, the DGCA-licensed facility at the Belora Airport is likely to become operational from Q1FY26.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) gave the tender to build and operate the facility to Air India for 30 years. “The FTO at Amravati will be a significant step towards making Indian aviation more self-reliant and offering more opportunities to the youth in India to fulfil their ambitions of flying as pilots,” said Campbell Wilson, Managing Director and CEO at Air India.
This is the first pilot training institute to be set up by an airline in India.
Air India will provide 31 single-engine jets and 3 twin-engine jets for pilot training.
The institute will be developed in a 10-acre area
The facility will have classrooms enabled for digital instructions
World-class hostels
The operation centre will be digitised
The facility will also house a maintenance unit
The flight training organisation (FTO) will instruct students in world-class curricula “at par with best-in-class global schools,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, Director, Aviation Academy, Air India.

The agreement between MADC and Air India is likely to create 3,000 jobs in the aviation sector. Allied sectors will also receive a fillip from the deal, and is likely to add Rs 1,000 crore to the state’s kitty in the next 10 years, said Swati Pandey, vice chairman and MD at MADC.
