‘Lives are more important’: India’s World Cup-winning captain opens up on Bengaluru stampede

New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.

The RCB squad returned to Bengaluru to celebrate their IPL victory with their fans, but things took a turn as a stampede broke out near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where more than two lakh fans gathered to celebrate the team’s title victory. 11 people lost their lives, and over 50 people were injured in the turmoil.

The franchise released a statement after the stampede, announcing a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the 11 dead in the tragedy. Former India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev reacted to the stampede during the RCB’s victory celebration.

“I feel very bad about that. I think we have to learn from each other. Next time something like this (victory parade) happens, people should be more conscious. People do make a mistake,” Kapil told PTI. He also said lives are more important than celebrations and if a team wins in future, keep it calm.

An FIR has also been registered against RCB, event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks, Karnataka State Cricket Association and others in connection with the stampede near the stadium.
