India continue total domination over South Africa with 10-wicket win in one-off women’s Test

New Delhi: India women continued their total domination over South Africa after completing a crushing 10-wicket victory over the visitors on the fourth and final day of the one-off Test in Chennai. The home side dominated the play from Day 1 and despite valiant fight from the Proteas, India proved too strong in all three departments. The victory saw India continue their winning run in the current series.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side came into the one-off Test on the back of whitewashing the Proteas in the three-match ODI series and the carried their winning momentum in red-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s woes against India continued. In less than 48 hours, both the men’s and women’s teams suffered heartbreaking defeats against India. The Men in Blue edged past the Proteas by 7 runs in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final on Saturday.

Shafali, Mandhana set the tone for huge win

Indian opener Shafali Varma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149) set the tone for an emphatic win with a record-breaking partnership on Day 1. The duo stitched a 292-run stand for the opening wicket to enter the history books. The sensational stand between Mandhana and Shafali is now the highest opening partnership in women’s Test cricket. Courtesy of the emphatic start, India also became the first team to breach the 600-run mark in first-class women’s cricket.

The hosts declared their first innings on 603/6 and bowled the hosts out for 266 in their first innings. Asked to follow-on, SA showed good fight in the second essay, scoring 373 thanks to hundreds from Laura Wolvaardt (122, 314b, 16×4) and Sune Luus (109, 203b, 18×4) in the second innings.

India were required to chase a modest 37 runs to win, India crossed the line in 9.2 overs without losing a wicket.

The opening pair of Shubha Satheesh (13 not out) and Shafali Verma (24 not out) took India home without any trouble.

The all-format tour now continues with a three-match T20I series starting on July 5, Friday. Chennai will host all three matches.
