Sneh Rana scripts history, becomes 1st Indian spinner to achieve elusive feat in women’s Tests

New Delhi: Continuing their dominance against South Africa, India registered a thumping 10-wicket victory in the ond-off Test between the two sides at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, July 01. Having clean swept the Proteas 3-0 in the three-match ODI series, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India extended their winning streak against the visitors.

Sneh Rana starred with the ball for India in the game and was awarded the Player of the Match for her bowling heroics in the game. She scripted history by becoming the first Indian spinner to take a 10-wicket haul in a Test match. Rana picked up an eight-wicket haul in South Africa’s first innings and followed it up with two wickets in the second innings.

Rana became the second Indian bowler after the legendary Jhulan Goswami to take a 10-wicket haul in a Test match for the country and the first spinner to do so. She ran through the Proteas’ top and middle order in their first innings to bundle them out for 266 runs, in response to India’s first-innings total of 603/6 (declared).

India thrash South Africa by ten wickets

India hammered South Africa by ten wickets in the one-off Test match to end the series on a high. Batting first, India rode on a sublime double hundred from opener Shafali Verma and a magnificent century from Smriti Mandhana to post a huge total of 606 runs on the board. Verma top-scored with 205 runs off 197 balls while Mandhana scored 149 runs off 161 balls.

The likes of Jemimah Rodrigues (55), Harmanpreet Kaur (69) and Richa Ghosh (86) also made crucial contributions towards India’s total. In reply, South Africa were bundled out for 266 runs after Rana ran riot with the ball. While she picked up 8 wickets in the first innings, all-rounder Deepti Sharma managed to get the remaining two wickets.

India enforced the follow-on on South Africa following which the Proteas were skittled out for 373 runs. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt slammed a 122-run knock while Sune Luus scored 109 runs off 203 balls. However, their centuries could only propel South Africa to 373/10 in their second innings, helping them set a target of 37 runs for India in their second innings. India chased down the target comfortably with 10 wickets to spare to register a dominant win.
