Andres Iniesta set to hang up his boots from an illustrious career

New Delhi: Spain and Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta is all set to retire from the game at 40. The legendary midfielder has been a free agent for quite a few months now, having left his last club, Emirates FC, at the end of his contract this year in July. He is one of the best midfielders to have come out of his generation and a long servant in the Camp Nou.

Though he hasn’t been on the pitch, he recently shared a video on social media, painting a mural of his with the caption that read, “Coming soon 08-10-2024.”

Iniesta is one of Spain’s most beloved players. He was part of a great Spanish football generation that won back-to-back Euros and lifted their first World Cup in 2010. In the final, Iniesta scored the winning goal for La Roja four minutes from the end of extra time. For Spain, he has made fifth-highest appearances with 131 caps and 14 goals.

One obvious reason everyone is expecting the big announcement on October 8 is that no.8 has been his jersey number for the majority of his career in Barcelona. This is the reason popular publication Relevo is speculating Iniesta will call it a day on the 8th.

His exploits with Barcelona are also astounding, as he was part of Barca’s treble-winning sides in 2009 and 2015. Throughout his career, he claimed four Champions League medals, nine La Liga titles, three Club World Cups, and six Coopas del Rey. For Barca, he made 674 appearances, scored 57 times, and assisted 135 times from his debut in 2002 until his transfer to Visel Kobe in 2018.

In Visel Kobe, he played in 134 games, scored 26 times, and made 25 assists before his move to Dubai last year, where he scored five goals and one assist from his 23 games. There is little doubt that in an era which saw Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Xavi Hernandez, Iniesta carved his own identity for himself, with his brilliant midfield exploits.

The former Barca star has hinted at retirement after remaining as a free agent during the entire transfer market period.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
