Andy Murray set to play doubles in his swansong appearance in Wimbledon

New Delhi: Andy Murray has confirmed that he will participate in the doubles event in Wimbledon after announcing his withdrawal from the singles leg last week, almost a week after his back surgery. Murray, who is a two-time Wimbledon champion, will be making his appearance for the one last time at the All England Club.

The 37-year-old pulled out of the singles competition just hours before he was supposed to play Tomas Machac on Centre Court. After his withdrawal, Murray’s management team said that unfortunately despite working remarkable hard on his recovery since his surgery just a week ago, Murray has taken the difficult decision decision of not playing the singles this year.

The tennis player was extremely disappointed by his forced withdrawal but at the same time confirmed that he will take part in the doubles with his brother Jamie and is looking forward to compete at the Grand Slam for the last time. Murray had a surgery on June 22 to remove a cyst from his spinal cord.

Want to retire after Olympics: Murray

The British tennis player had earlier said that he wishes to retire after the Paris Olympics 2024, which will start on July 26 and run till August 11. The last few years have been tough for the champion tennis player as he has dealt with a lot of injuries. While a bad back has majorly created hurdles in his tennis career, he has also suffered from a hip problem which has required two surgical interventions.

Murray stopped playing during a second-round match at the grass-court tournament at Queen’s Club in London last month because he was having trouble walking. He later explained that the cyst was compressing a nerve in his back and leaving his right leg numb.

Murray owns three major championships: The U.S. Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. His 2013 title made him the first British man to win the Wimbledon singles in 77 years.

Andy Murray will play doubles in his final appearance at the Wimbledon 2024, after he confirmed his withdrawal from the singles event last week.  Tennis Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
