New Delhi: Indian skipper Shubman Gill has joined his team in Harare ahead of the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe starting on Saturday. The Men in Blue and Zimbabwe will lock horns in five T20I matches commencing from July 6 to July 14.
Gill, who was part of the reserves for the T20 World Cup 2024 and was subsequently released by the Indian cricket management, was spending some time off in the US before the series. Team India along with the interim head coach VVS Laxman reached Zimbabwe earlier and were waiting for their captain to arrive.
Gill to start practice from Wednesday
According to sources, Gill will start practicing for the series from Wednesday, three days ahead of the start. Gill has been playing constantly since the South Africa Test series in December last year and took a 3-week vacation after getting released for India’s T20 World Cup squad last month.
Meanwhile, earlier today, three changes were made to India’s 15-man squad, with Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal being excluded from the team and Sai Sudarshan, Jitesh Sharma, and Harshit Rana being named as their replacements. The reason behind the sudden change isn’t certain. But it is being believed that the trio were rested from the tour as the India team will all the three players is stuck in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl.
Another possibility is that all three will be given a chance later when India tour Sri Lanka for a six-match white-ball series. While Dube played the T20 World Cup games, Samson and Jaiswal were both benched all through the mega event.
