New Delhi: More than 100 people have died and many injured in a stampede at a religious event on Tuesday. The incident occurred at a ‘satsang’ event in Pulrai village, where people had gathered in large numbers. Trucks and other vehicles brought victims to the Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre. The bodies were laid outside the health centre as people milled around them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. The Uttar Pradesh government said an FIR will be registered against the programme’s organisers. This is not the first time an incident has happened in India. Kumbh Mela stampede, 1954

On February 3, 1954, a massive crowd was crushed at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. It was the main bathing day of Mauni Amavasya (New Moon) when the incident took place. With an estimated participation of over 4 million pilgrims, it was the first Kumbh Mela after India’s Independence. The tragedy claimed more than 500 lives and left over 100 injured, marking it as one of the worst stampedes in India’s history.

Mandhardevi temple stampede, 2005

On January 25, 2005, over 340 devotees lost their lives, and hundreds were injured in a preventable stampede during an annual pilgrimage at Mandhardevi temple in Satara district, Maharashtra. The tragedy occurred when some people slipped on the steps, which had become slippery due to the devotees breaking coconuts on them.

Baripada stampede, 1997

A fire erupted at a sect leader’s congregation in Odisha’s Baripada district, and a stampede followed, which left 206 people dead on February 23, 1997, and more than 200 people suffered injuries.
