This condition is usually diagnosed in patients aged 65 years and above. It can result in memory loss and behavioural and personality changes. This condition is becoming more common lately and is likely to get worse overtime if not treated or addressed well in time. It also has no cure – but according to scientists, 40% of the cases can be prevented through basic lifestyle changes. And there is one breakfast food that can go a long way to reduce the risk of this condition.
How do eggs reduce dementia risk?
According to experts, some of the best lifestyle changes that can reduce dementia risk are:
Limiting alcohol intake
Quitting smoking
Healthy, balanced diet
Specifically the Mediterranean diet can work well to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. The research was published in the Journal of Nutrition and it found that eating eggs could go a long way in fighting the risk of the disease. One of the best sources of proteins and healthy fats, also deemed one of the healthiest foods on the planet, is crucial for a healthy brain.
Eggs are some of the best sources of omega-3 fats, choline and lutein. As a part of the study, US experts analysed data of over 1000 participants considered to be of an older age. Information of their diet was given in a food frequency questionnaire and it also mapped how many eggs one ate in a week. During a follow-up duration of about six years, 280 of the participants developed the condition. The team of researchers found that one egg per week could also do the trick.
Researchers said that evidence also suggests that regular intake of eggs can improve cognitive performance in verbal tests. Furthermore 39% of the total benefits obtained from eggs are attributed to choline. And this study is not the only one of its kind to state th same. Another study published in 2022 in Frontiers in Nutrition journal found that eating eggs can reduce the risk of this condition.
