Dengue Alert: NIV reveals 50% samples tested postive for disease in Pune; check preventive tips

New Delhi: Dengue cases are rapidly increasing in many parts of the country including Bangalore and Pune. In the latest report, five cases of dengue have been confirmed in the Pimpri Chinchwad civic limits within a week. This is posing a challenge to the civic officials to civic officials to combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Following the rising cases of viral infection in Pune, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has revealed that there has been a 50 per cent positivity rate among the 100 samples being tested.

According to officials of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), three cases of dengue have been confirmed in the last week of June in the twin cities and two more cases have also been reported on Tuesday.  The Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department said that there have been 487 suspected cases of dengue this year and out of this 157 cases were reported in June itself.

Along with dengue cases, there has also been a spike in Zika virus-related diseases. The group leader of the dengue and chikungunya department of NIV, Dr Anuradha Tripathy said that they usually receive around 4,000 to 5,000 samples and about 100 samples for testing and at least half of them are positive with dengue viral fever.

In conversation with News9, Dr Nidhin Mohan, Consultant Internal Medicines, Narayana Health City, Bangalore said, “People should be vigilant for early signs of dengue, such as high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding (e.g., nose or gums).”

Symptoms to be careful of

“Alarming symptoms include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, fatigue, and blood in vomit or stool. If these symptoms appear, seek immediate medical attention,” added Dr Mohan.

Amid such conditions, it is imperative to take necessary precautions. At home and even while going out, use mosquito repellents, wear long sleeves and pants, and ensure windows and doors are screened to prevent mosquito bites. Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed by regularly cleaning containers, gutters, and other potential mosquito habitats. Early detection and preventive measures are crucial.
