Are you a coffee lover? Study says 2-3 cups per day is safe, may protect heart health

New Delhi: Are you also a coffee lover? Then this is for you, a recent study has found that drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee or tea a day may help protect the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The findings of the study are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Daily coffee drinkers have better heart health as compared to the nondrinkers- provided they do not drink too much caffeine.

For the study, the researchers from China and Sweden examined the coffee and tea drinking habits of 188,000 people among the age groups of 37 to 73 from the UK Biobank. It is a huge database which contains secret health information of people, these were the people who completed the questionnaires about their beverage intake over the past 24 hours. They also checked the responses of the 172,000 people who noted that they drank caffeinated coffee or tea.

As per the information gathered, it was noted that none of the participants had a history of cardiometabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease or even stroke. The researchers later followed up with the participant after 12 years and they found drinking two to three cups of coffee or up to three cups of tea a day was a sweet spot. Even people who consumed over 400 mg of caffeine a day that was just 4 per cent of the study’s caffeine drinkers. The stimulant did not show any negative impact on their cardiometabolic health.

While, among the ones who did, developed cardiometabolic diseases. Hence, drinking a moderate amount of coffee a day was still linked to a lower risk of developing another cardiometabolic disease.  On the other hand, consuming a moderate amount of caffeine was associated with some metabolites, a compound that is produced when the body digests foods and drinks that are linked to better cardiac health.
