Dengue or Zika Virus? How to differentiate the symptoms between these vector borne diseases

New Delhi: As the monsoon starts, the vector borne diseases also starts to spread. Many cities including Pune and Bengaluru are seeing a rise in Dengue and Zika virus cases. Vector borne diseases such as dengue, Zika virus and chikungunya diseases are caused by mosquito-borne viruses. It is imperative to know about the symptoms of all three and the differences, for early detection and treatment.

Dr Sheela Chakravarthy, Director – Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru draws the differentiation between the symptoms of dengue and Zika virus

Differentiating Dengue and Zika: Dengue and Zika share some symptoms, making diagnosis tricky.

Dengue: Often presents with a sudden, high fever (104°F or higher) lasting 2-7 days. Intense headaches, severe joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue are common. A red, flushed rash may appear after a few days. Dengue can progress to a severe form with bleeding gums, internal bleeding, and organ failure.

Zika: Usually milder than dengue. Many infected people (up to 80 per cent) experience no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they’re typically fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red, itchy eyes). These symptoms are usually much milder and resolve within a week.

Prevention Similarities and Differences: Both diseases are spread by infected Aedes mosquitoes. The key prevention strategy is the same: avoid mosquito bites. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds around your home. However, there are some differences:

Dengue Vaccine: A vaccine exists for dengue, but it’s not widely available and has limitations.

Zika and Pregnancy: Zika poses a significant risk to pregnant women, as it can cause birth defects in their babies. Pregnant women should strictly avoid mosquito bites in Zika-affected areas. If you experience fever, rash, or joint pain, consult a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and discuss any concerns you have.
