India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final and lifted their second T20 World Cup trophy. Rohit Sharma was the team’s highest run-getter in the tournament, scoring 257 runs in 8 matches. He also became the first captain to win the T20 World Cup without losing any match. After the match, Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game.

He said that he enjoyed playing this format and there is no better time to say goodbye to T20I cricket ‘This was my last game as well. I’ve enjoyed since the time I started playing this format. Better a time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted – I wanted to win the cup’.

Rohit played 159 matches for India and scored 4231 runs at an average of 31.34. He will continue to play ODI and Test cricket for India.

‘Every World Cup win is special’: Rohit Sharma

After the Trophy parade, Indian captain Rohit Sharma thanked the fans for their support and said that they wanted to bring the trophy back to India from the last 11 years and the fans were a bit more desperate for the trophy.

“On behalf of my team and BCCI, I would like to thank the fans. For the last 11 years, they have wanted the trophy back in India. As much desperation we had to win the trophy, the fans had it a bit more”.

He also said that every World Cup win is special “Every World Cup win is special. So I’d like to leave the 2007 where it is. We showed the world how to win the T20 World Cup. And 2011 we won the ODI World Cup in Wankhede. 2013 Champions Trophy in England, again that was special”.
