New Delhi: Mumbaikars woke up to heavy rain on Monday. Several places are left waterlogged, rain services are disrupted and a holiday has been declared for government and private schools, colleges and the BMC civic body. Rain brings a sigh of relief from the hot pinning weather but it comes with its challenges. The high humidity in the air during the rainy season can lead to a plethora of health conditions ranging from cold, cough, and flu to stomach health issues, and hair and skin problems.
Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics shared with News9, “During the monsoon, there is a higher risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid due to contaminated water sources. The higher humidity levels can trigger asthma and allergies. Cold, cough, flu, viral, and wheezing are common complaints during this season. The stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to dengue and malaria.”
“Apart from this, many people including children tend to suffer from gastroenteritis which is stomach flu during monsoon. This can lead to symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. To combat these problems, eat home-cooked food, avoid street food that can get contaminated with bacteria, and drink boiled water. Monsoons are also responsible for a higher number of accidents and injuries such as falls owing to the slippery surface. Furthermore, skin and hair problems can also give a tough time to many people,” added Dr Kapoor.
