Thiruvananthapuram: The rise in Swine Flu cases in Kerala has reached alarming levels with the first week of July reporting more than 200 cases with one casualty. Medical experts have advised public against over crowding in public spaces to stop the spread of the disease.
According to experts, the spread can be prevented by adopting precautions and mortality avoided with proper treatment.
In the month of June, the state reported 345 confirmed cases and five deaths.
“Viral fever, H1N1 and dengue are the most common ones now witnessed in the state. However, dengue and H1N1 are the most serious ones where the elderly and those with comorbidities needs to be extremely careful as it could lead to serious consequences. Dengue is caused due to mosquitoes and the spread can be avoided by cleaning the premises and also ensure that waste water from hotels and residences are removed and dried out. Overcrowding and changes in weather conditions are conducive to the spread of the virus. Thus, the public must take precautions and avoid overcrowding to stop the spread of the disease,” said Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, chairman of the Indian Medical Association Research Cell, Kerala state.

Dr Sanal Kumar, a community medicine specialist at a private hospital said that diagnosis and treatment at the right time is the need of the hour.
“Globally, there is a rise in the number of dengue, leptospirosis and H1N1 cases reported. Therefore, the health system, including the private hospitals should be prepared to deal with the situations as the number of cases rises in the country and the world”, said Dr Sanal Kumar to News9.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was held by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday where the CM advised to avoid contaminated water bodies and to ensure that swimming pools are chlorinated.
Meanwhile, the health department has issued a set of protocols to all government hospitals and primary health centres.
