New Delhi: Zika virus cases are rapidly increasing in Pune, Maharastra, with a total tally reaching 12. A 31-year-old pregnant woman from Yerawada tested positive for the infection on Monday. Among the total cases, the infection has been detected in six pregnant women. Zika virus is carried by infected mosquitoes, and pregnant women reporting the v virus is raising concern. On the other hand, healthy children who get Zika infection will not develop microcephaly. According to reports, only babies infected with Zika before they are born are at higher risk of declined brain development.
Dr Meenakshi Mohan Consultant pathologist -at Neuberg Pulse Diagnostics told News9, “Preventive measures for Zika virus in children are crucial, especially in regions where the virus is prevalent. The primary prevention method is to avoid mosquito bites, as the Aedes species mosquitoes primarily transmit Zika.”

Ensure your child wears proper clothes: Parents should ensure children wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, preferably light colours, to reduce exposed skin.
Use mosquito repellent: Using mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus is essential for further protection. It’s important to follow the instructions for safe application on children.
Keep the environment clean: Eliminating mosquito breeding sites around homes is another effective measure. This involves regularly emptying, cleaning, or covering containers that can hold water, such as flower pots, buckets, and toys.
Install window screens at home: Installing screens on windows and doors helps keep mosquitoes out of the house. For added protection, using mosquito nets over cribs and beds can prevent bites while children sleep.
Avoid travelling to areas with dengue cases: Parents should be cautious when travelling to areas with known Zika outbreaks.
Stay safe: Staying in accommodations with air conditioning and proper screening can reduce exposure to mosquitoes. If travelling is necessary, using mosquito netting over strollers and carriers can provide additional protection for infants.
