New Delhi: After the World Health Organization (WHO) was alarmed over the usage of talcum powder, suggesting a possible link of cancer concerns has been raised among people across the world. As per the report, Talc, the mineral used to make talcum has been detected to contain carcinogenic substances that can potentially increase the risk of cancer.
Talcum is a very common household product, most commonly used for infants to prevent diaper rashes or by women for hygiene purposes. Globally, talc is considered to be a mineral while extracted poses an exposure risk during mining or refining. As per reports, it is found in various consumer products including cosmetics, body powder, food items and more.
According to Mayo Clinic, the medicine or the talc is to be used only by or under the direct supervision of a doctor. But what about the doctor’s prescribed talcum powder use? In conversation with News9, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said, “As the temperature and humidity rise, sweat buildup becomes a common cause of worry. You often might feel stickiness on your palms, hands, and thighs due to excessive moisture buildup caused by sweat. This can aggravate skin problems like rashes, irritation, and fungal infection.”
What is the percentage of cancer risk?
In this case, talcum powder comes to the rescue. Now the main concern is finding the right type of talcum powder which has ingredients that are safer and gentle on your skin. Consulting experts can be helpful in actively combating these common concerns.
Dr Kapoor further said, “Your doctor might closely examine your current situation and try to find the root cause of the problem. He or she might consider various factors like your skin type, allergies, and history of medical conditions for prescribing appropriate talcum powder. They will prescribe talcum powder with safer ingredients that suit your skin type and texture. The percentage of developing cancer risk due to the regular usage of talcum powder is around 5 to 10 per cent.
