Salazar Pit Viper Snake: How, when, and where was it discovered?
In 2019, researchers first spotted a venomous snake in Arunachal Pradesh. It was named ‘Trimeresurus Salazar’ but is commonly called Salazar’s pit viper. The snake was discovered during a field expedition in the forests of the Pakke Tiger Reserve.
The newly discovered Salazar Pit Viper, named after Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the famous Harry Potter series, was found in the park highway zone. New species are introduced and discovered in the park yearly in different seasons.
The Salazar Pit Viper (Trimeresurus Lacepede) is a newly found species in Kaziranga, characterised by its vibrant green body and red-orange stripes on its head. Initially sighted in Arunachal Pradesh, researchers named it the Salazar’s pit viper due to its resemblance to Salazar Slytherin. In a little over a year, this new species is believed to be the fifth variation of reptiles found in the northeastern state.
About Salazar Pit Viper Snakes
The Salazar Pit Viper is easily recognisable due to its bright green colour and a distinctive red-orange stripe on its head, which makes it a visually stunning species. These snakes belong to the pit viper family, known for their venomous bite and heat-sensing organs between their eyes and nostrils. These specialised organs enable pit vipers to detect warm-blooded prey even in the dark.
About Pit Viper Snakes
Pit vipers are striking and dangerous snakes found on different continents and environments. They are skilled hunters with unique heat-sensing capabilities that allow them to track and kill their prey. The term “pit viper” encompasses a group of snakes with similar traits belonging to the Viperidae family. However, not all snakes in the Viperidae family are pit vipers; for example, the puff adder is not a pit viper.
