Washington: A woman has sued JetBlue for $1.5 million after she claimed that she suffered disfiguring burns after being burnt by hot tea water during turbulent conditions on the flight, as per a media report.
Identified as Tahjana Lewis, the woman was travelling with her family on JetBlue flight 2237 from Orlando to Hartford, Connecticut, on May 15.
In a complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Connecticut, she alleged that JetBlue failed to ensure “reasonably safe travelling conditions” during the turbulent flight at the time of the incident.
The complaint filed by the passenger says that while the aircraft encountered turbulence and the seatbelt sign was illuminated, a crew member accidentally spilt hot tea on her as part of the in-flight beverage service.
According to the details in the complaint, this accident caused second and third-degree burns on her chest, legs, right arm, and backside.
The complaint further alleges that the crew served water at an “unreasonably” hot temperature during an “ongoing turbulence,” making it unsafe to perform beverage service.
Lewis also claimed that the crew did not “administer first aid” and advised her to seek medical help upon landing.
According to the complaint, Lewis has scarring at her burn sites and suffered mental anguish, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress from the incident.
No official statement has been made by the airline yet and more details are awaited.
