New Delhi: Following the conclusion of the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany, England National Team manager Gareth Southgate has left his role after guiding the Three Lions to another UEFA Euro final. The Englishman had been in the role since 2016 when he replaced Sam Allardyce in the dugout.
Southgate led the Three Lions to two consecutive UEFA Euro final appearances in his tenure as the manager, becoming the first-ever manager to lead the English football team to the finals of the UEFA Euro in 2021. He leaves the team after eight years, making them regulars in the final stages of major International competitions under his tenure. In a statement by the English FA, he said “As (a) proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England.” He added, “But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role”
The Englishman took charge of the team following Sam Allardyce’s ill-fated one-game tenure as the manager of the national team, initially on an interim basis. Southgate had been part of the England national team setup since 2013 when he took over as manager of the England U-21 side, which earned him the England job after Allardyce’s sacking in 2016. His impressive run as the interim manager of England led to him being awarded the role permanently by the English FA.
After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the #ThreeLions.

His tenure with the Three Lions was a hugely successful one in comparison to his predecessors and he was arguably England’s best manager since Sir Alf Ramsay. He took charge of his first major tournament in 2018 with the FIFA World Cup in Russia where he led the side to the semi-finals and ultimately finished fourth, England’s best finish at a World Cup since the 1990 edition. At the 2022 World Cup as well, he led the side to a quarter-final finish.
Southgate followed that up by reaching the finals of both UEFA Euro 2020 and 2024 but failed to cross the final hurdle with his side losing Euro 2020 on penalties to Italy and losing in Berlin to Spain on Sunday. After making England regulars at the last stages of major tournaments, he leaves big shoes behind for his successor to fill in.
He became only the third England manager to take charge of the national team for more than 100 games, finishing with 102 games in charge, maintaining an almost 60% win percentage across eight years with the side.
