World Emoji Day: What is the importance of this day?

New Delhi: In today’s world, emojis have become an integral part of our conversations. Whenever we text a friend or someone close, we use emojis to express our feelings. With each passing day, the array of emojis on different texting apps is only increasing. Hence, to pay our respect to the growing importance of emojis, World Emoji Day is celebrated every year on July 17. The day celebrates emoji and over the years, it has also become a popular date for organisations to launch products or make announcements related to emoji. In this article, we will know about this day.

How did World Emoji Day originate?

World Emoji Day began on July 17, 2014, when Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia created it. Notably, on that day in 2002, Apple premiered its iCal calendar application and July 17 was shown as an Easter egg on the Apple Color Emoji version of the calendar emoji.

Hence, Burge chose the date July 17 to celebrate World Emoji Day as the concept was based on the way the calendar emoji is shown on iPhones, according to a report by The New York Times. During the first World Emoji Day, Burge informed The Independent that there were no plans about the day and only the date was chosen. In 2018, the Washington Post came up with the idea that people can converse only with emojis on this day.

Over the years, several well-established organisations have chosen the day to announce new projects related to emojis. Since 2017, Apple has used that day to announce new expansions of emojis on iOS and in 2015, Pepsi launched PepsiMoji with special cans and emoji keyboard. Google released several new inclusive emoji about women coming from different backgrounds in 2016 and Emojipedia started the first World Emoji Awards. Other organisations like Disney, Twitter (presently X) and Coca-Cola have also used the occasion to make a slew of announcements.

In 2017, the famous Empire State Building in New York City was lit in ’emoji yellow’ to celebrate the day and Jake T. Austin of The Emoji Movie and Jeremy Burge from Emojipedia rang the Closing Bell of the New York Stock Exchange. On the same day, an attempt for a Guinness World Record was made in Dubai for the largest gathering of people dressed as emojis.

The day celebrates the growing importance of emojis in our everyday conversations, especially with our friends and our closed ones. With each passing day, the array of emojis on different texting apps is only increasing.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
