Family of Tatas
Nusserwanji Tata (1822–1886) was the head of the Tata family. He married Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata, and they had five children: Jamsetji Tata, Ratanbai Tata, Maneckbai Tata, Virbaiji Tata, and Jerbai Tata. Jamsetji Tata, Nusserwanji’s son, established the Tata Group, one of India’s largest and most influential conglomerates.
Jamsetji Tata (1839–1904), the Tata Group’s founder, is often called the “Father of Indian Industry.” He started with a textile mill in central India in the 1870s. He played a major part in developing India’s steel and power industries, creating technical education institutions, and promoting India’s industrial advancement. Jamsetji was married to Hirabai Daboo, and they had three children: Sir Dorabji Tata, Dhunbai Tata, and Sir Ratan Tata.
Sir Dorabji Tata (1859–1932), Jamsetji’s oldest son, played a big part in the Tata Group’s growth. He was given a knighthood in 1910 for his contributions to India’s industrial development.
Sir Ratan Tata (1871–1918) was heavily involved in the family business and philanthropy. He was Jamsetji’s younger son.
Sir Ratan Tata and Navajbai Sett adopted Naval H Tata (1904–1989). He married Soonoo Commisariat, and they had two sons, Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata. Naval later married Simone Dunoyer, and they had a son named Noel Tata.
Ratan Tata and his brother Jimmy Tata grew up with their half-brother, Noel Tata. After their parents’ divorce, their grandmother, Navajbai Sett, raised Ratan and Jimmy at Tata Palace, the family estate in Mumbai.
Ratan Tata spent most of his life leading the Tata Group, serving as its chairman from 1991 to 2012. He played a crucial role in the company’s global expansion during his tenure, including significant acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover. Additionally, he focused on philanthropy through Tata Trusts, working on various social and charitable projects across India.

Simone Tata: Ratan Tata’s stepmother. The French-Swiss Catholic married Naval Tata in 1955 and settled in Mumbai—former managing director of Lakme and chairperson of Trent.
Jimmy Tata: Younger brother of Ratan Tata. The second child of Naval Tata and Soonoo Commissariat, he is considered an intensely private man with humble tastes. He lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Colaba.
Aloo and Noel Tata: Tata’s half-brother and wife. Noel chairs Trent, and Aloo is the daughter of Pallonji Mistry of Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Aloo’s brother, Cyrus Mistry, succeeded Tata as chairman of Tata Sons but was later ousted after a bitter battle.
Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy: Ratan Tata has half-sisters from his mother’s second marriage. Soonoo, one of his half-sisters, married Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy after divorcing Naval Tata. They had three daughters: Shireen, Deanna, and Geeta. Information on Geeta Jejeebhoy is not available.
Leah Tata: Noel’s daughter. She was reported to be closely working with the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the conglomerate.
Maya Tata: Noel’s daughter and reportedly Tata’s favourite niece.
Manasi and Neville Tata: Noel’s son, Neville, married Manasi Kirloskar. They have two children, Jamset Tata and Tiana Tata. Neville focuses on Trent brands like Zudio. Manasi is the daughter of the late Vikram S Kirloskar and serves on multiple boards of Kirloskar companies.
