New Delhi: The world came to a standstill due to the global cyber outage which took place on Friday, July 19. In what is being the biggest cyber outage in history, many sectors, including healthcare and banking were hit while thousands of flights were cancelled worldwide. The Paris Olympics 2024 was no exception as the organisers revealed they were also impacted.
The accreditation process and uniform deliveries for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics were impacted due to the outage. The organisers are currently in the process of disbursing the accreditation to various media persons and other support staff who will be coming to Paris from various parts of the world for the showpiece event.
“The global technical issues affecting Microsoft software has affected some of Paris 2024’s IT services,” the organising committee for Paris Olympics said in a press release.
While the delivery of uniforms and accreditations were affected, there was no impact on the ticketing systems for the Paris Olympics 2024. With less than a week left for the Games to get underway, hundreds of athletes and delegations from several countries have started reaching Paris and the organising committee is leaving no stone unturned in welcoming the guests arriving in the city.
“At this point, the impacts are limited and concern in particular the delivery of uniforms and accreditations. Our teams have been fully mobilized to ensure the continuity of operations at optimum levels. Paris 2024’s ticketing systems have been unaffected. The operations around the preparation of venues is continuing normally, and work schedules are not at risk,” the statement added.
Cyber-security firm Crowdstrike revealed the global outage was a result of a problem caused by an update to its anti-virus software. The software has been designed to protect Windows devices from cyber attacks. The American cybersecurity firm later also confirmed that they have fixed the issue but that it will take some time for the systems to get back to normal.
Paris Olympics to get underway on July 24
The Paris Olympics 2024 is scheduled to get underway on July 24 with two football matches on the day. Spain will take on Uzbekistan in their opener while Argentina football team will take on Morocco. The Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony will take place on July 26. India will begin their campaign in Paris on July 27.
