The risk was not really necessary, says Sunil Gavaskar on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run out

New Delhi: Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has said that sensational Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal could have avoided getting run out on the second day of the fourth Test match against Australia at the MCG. Virat Kohli and Jaiswal attempted a risky single run that led to the latter’s run-out, getting Australia back into the match after India had consolidated their position.

Jaiswal smashed a brilliant 82 runs off 118 balls on the second day of the game but fell 18 runs short of a century after going in for a risky single with Kohli, who got out minutes later on 36 runs. In an interaction on Star Sports, Gavaskar addressed the horrible mix-up that derailed India’s position in the match.

Gavaskar slams Jaiswal, Kohli for quick single

“It would have been a quick run, and somebody like Virat Kohli would definitely have made it. But the thing was, he looked at the fielder. When you look at the fielder, when you turn, you’ve lost that vital second. Your balance is completely off. And it would have been a tight run,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

The legendary Indian cricketer further said that the stage at which India were, the need of taking a risk was totally not required. He added that Kohli could have completed the run had he committed himself fully to it as he is a fantastic runner. Both the batters were well set and had consolidated a partnership of more than 100 runs when the terrible mix-up changed the fate of the game.

After Jaiswal’s wicket, India lost two more wickets thus ending the day on a disappointing note with the score at 164/5, still trailing Australia by 310 more runs. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja were on the crease for the visitors as the only formidable pair available for them.
